The radial slit phase plug had already been invented, patented, and produced by, i think Bell labs, but don’t quote me on that as it might have actually been an RCA patent, i simply don’t have the time to locate that info right now, google patent searches take time. Russellc , Sep 2, These factors, together with the all-important ALTEC criteria of engineering experience, combine to produce. Does this apply to A and the B having the smooth body.

First let me say thanks to Bowties and everyone else for your input 808-8aa are a wealth of information. Share This Page Tweet.

Both units work wonderfully. AFAIK, the only difference between an and an is vintage.
I have posted some photos of driver. SeanInstalling type aluminum diaphragms and using a compensation circuit will do more for your zltec frequencies than a different phasing plug will, I’d do at least the diaphragms. The entire diaphragm and voice coil assembly of the A and A is field replaceable; no special tools are required.

However, from most suppliers the cost difference between the GPA and radian phragms lansin negligable, and the GPA’s sound best to my ears.
IMO, the radian diaphragm is the only option to the genuine articles from GPA, i have heard the radians and they sound good. If your As have the Symbiotic ‘frams they came with though, there’s likely more room for improvement there.

I’m wondering if anyone who’s had both GPA and original Altec ‘s was able to detect any audible difference that they would attribute to the difference in phase plugs. Either driver is capable of uniform, peak-free reproduction to a point far above the range of human hearing.
Carefully inspected, with both music and both units swept k with signal generator. Such conditions would be analagous to the average listening room or smaller broadcast and recording studio. I’d fab something out of any material you have on hand with good electrical insulating qualities. Babgrip, got a date code for that driver?
As has been stated many times in the past, and will be stated many times again in the future, never say “never” with Altex. They sound matched, clean and quite detailed. Another interesting note, well to some of us anyway, the new small format drivers from GPA use a phase plug very similar to the tangerine, but it has only 9 slits vs the 13 of the tangerine. Your name or email address: These factors, together with the all-important ALTEC criteria of engineering experience, combine to produce the A and A high-frequency loudspeakers of virtually matchless quality and limitless application.
If algec note on the catalog pages Dave posted, there’s some fine print that says: RussellcSep 4, Hi new member here was wondering i have a pair of a drivers i use on my system and was wondering if the G with the tangerine phase plug was better.
